There are more than enough ways to lose at poker, but here are three of the main reasons I see most often. If you can manage these three things youll be well on your way to becoming a poker master.
1. Playing Too Many Starting Hands. 2. Playing at Limits Too High in Relation to Their Bankroll 3. Trying to Get Back to Even
We are going to take a look at these one at a time. But beware; the answer to winning is in all of these. Dont just take one of the suggestions and incorporate it. Use all of it. Why? Because it will work for you. The important key is to use these tips to develop your own style of play that is complimentary to you.
1. Playing Too Many Starting Hands
Simply put, you may be playing too many hands. Start by tightening up and playing only the absolute best hands. I would recommend that you only play AA, KK, A-K, QQ. Then when you start to win with these hands slowly introduce other hands into your game. Add JJ first. When you are successful with JJ then add 10-10 and so on.
2. Playing at Limits Too High in Relation to Their Bankroll
Am I playing at the correct limits for my skill level? The higher the limits, the better the competition tends to be. There is nothing wrong with dropping down from say, playing 1/2 blinds to .50/1 or even less and then working your way up when you feel comfortable. If you feel the need, then play at the free tables a little. Remember though, youll have a tendency to play differently for free than when real money is at stake.
3. Trying to Get Back to Even
This one is really important. Ive seen many people on a losing streak and they keep going and going, hoping for a good turn of cards to get them back into it. It rarely happens though. As a result, you could end up losing your shirt if you cant tell when to quit and fight another day. Really, mistakes #1 and #3 sort of go together, in the sense that, if you have a crappy hand its probably better to go ahead and fold. Id rather avoid big poker mistakes and fold the garbage hands instead of losing all my chips.
